I really like DVD courses, they are relatively cheap but are usually high quality, and you can learn pretty much anything from them like dancing, the drums, you can even get a few Blues guitar DVD courses too. The advantage of having a DVD course over just following a book is that you actually get to watch what the fingers of the instructor are doing as they demonstrate the different songs and techniques, as well as hearing what that piece should sound like as well.
I think that hearing how the piece should sound is crucial if you want to learn it yourself, I know that technically you should be able to play it just from reading the sheet music, but it is hard to grasp the rhythm of it just from the sheet music (for me anyway). Now imagine if you used a book instead, then you wouldn’t be able to watch or listen to anything and you’d have to learn new techniques from just a few pictures and some written descriptions, plus any example pieces you have to play would just be written notes too.
Every DVD course or book I have seen though is designed to teach you how to adapt your playing to fit into the Blues style (and they also teach some new techniques that are Blues-specific). So you need to be able to play the guitar, and read music and understand all the theory etc, before you invest any money into a course to teach you about the Blues. If you don’t know how to play the guitar at the moment don’t despair though, there are plenty of ways you can learn it nowadays. There are DVD courses and books just like with the Blues stuff, but there are also loads of free videos on the internet, and paid memberships with hundreds of videos on.
