Choose A Wrist Blood Pressure Monitor

Blood pressure monitors as their name suggests are used for measuring a person’s blood pressure. There are many different types of these measuring devices which vary in size and cost from those used by doctors in a hospital setting to the small wrist BP monitor that you can use at home. This article is concentrating on the blood pressure devices that are intended for home use.

A normal healthy person will have a blood pressure of 120 over 80 which is the way that the systolic and diastolic pressures are quoted. The condition known as high blood pressure or hypertension is present when a reading of 140 over 90 or higher is obtained. This condition should not be left untreated because it can lead to a stroke or heart attack. Because there are no obvious symptoms when a person has high blood pressure it is advisable to have regular checks.

Because it only takes a few minutes to make the check your doctor will often do this as a matter of course when you visit. But many people prefer the convenience of owning their own wrist BP monitor so that they can make the check at home. Some people have been worried that using a wrist monitor may not give a truly accurate reading. However this can be overcome by having your monitor calibrated from the monitor used at the clinic.

All wrist monitors manufactured today have automatic cuff inflation and a digital display for the results unlike the old anaeroid instruments which used a mechanical dial and a bulb pump. This review will cover models from three manufacturers, Omron, ADC Advantage and Panasonic.

All the models have similar basic features of automatic cuff inflation, digital display of systolic and diastolic pressure and a memory to store a number of readings with a record of the time and date. As you would expect most brands have a number of different models and by and large the more you pay the greater number of features you find.

Turning to particular models the Panasonic EW3006S Wrist Blood Pressure Monitor.  This model uses Digital Filter Technology to detect and isolate only the essential pulse oscillation which leads to quick and reliable measurements. The 90 memory feature allows you to save readings for two different individuals. The Braun VitalScan Plus Wrist Blood Pressure Monitor. Another large display model with a clean and stylish design. Saves 90 measurements with date and time and has a low battery indicator. The Lumiscope 1143 Automatic Wrist Blood Pressure Monitor. This model has a large LCD display and an 85 memory recall. There is also and auto shut off to save the batteries.

This review has only looked at a few models to give you an idea of what is available. If you are interested in purchasing a wrist blood pressure monitor, you will need to consider other models before you make your final choice, but hopefully this will point you in the right direction.
